I just lost 2 days work – 5 tips for not loosing work…

January 27th, 2015

I just spent 2 days working on a track and forgot to hit save once in 2 days…. I think I am loosing my edge! Usually with Ableton its ok but today it all went a bit wrong…Its hard to explain how much pain I feel about loosing work. I always pick myself up again and make the tune better but it stings man! it really stings….┬áhere are my 5 tips for not loosing work.

1: Hit Save a lot!

I remember back in day with older computers they would crash all the time so I had a kind of nervous save twitch, I have lost so much work like I did today through not just hitting save. HIT SAVE!!

2: Make a backup? no make 4.

Data does not exist unless its in 3 places at once. I am so paro I make 4 just in case.

3: Keep one backup out of the studio.

God forbid your place gets burned down or any other destruction falls upon your studio it is wise to keep one backup out of the studio, I am not sold on cloud backups I think its better to manage backups in as secure manner as possible which does not involve the internet.

4: Keep notes or a list.

Document your work, I have a book with a page for each tune so I can just keep all my thoughts in one place. It is useful even if you don’t have to remake a tune from your notes.

5: Hit Save again!!

oh yeah and bounce the stems!

I had another thought too, I think its always a good idea to bounce all the tracks as stems at the end of the tune process so you always have the same mix in tracks. nothing worse than trying to open an old project on a new comp and finding out you don’t have half the sounds.
