Is it ok to be influenced by people? 5 of my biggest musical influences

The other day I was listening to Stevie Wonder – Sir Duke and it really got me thinking about how every artist gets influenced by someone no matter who they are and the people who influenced them also had influences of they’re own. Its like it gives you a solid grounding in the music you make and it gives it meaning.

Here are 5 of my influences:

Number 1: DJ Premier

When I was a nipper I was always listening to the premier instrumentals, I loved all the samples he dug out and the tight nature of the cuts. never straying from vibe and always on point. I got to shake the hand that made all the beats a couple years back in Bristol. A very special moment in my life.

Number 2: The Prodigy

Everyone seems to sight The Prodigy as one of they’re influences nowadays but for me when tunes like Voodoo People and Break and Enter came out I was so completely taken aback by the rawness and lack of compromise on the records. So hard hitting!

Number 3: Dave Grohl

I kinda feel like some of the Foo Fighters stuff could almost be DnB! A very grungy version. The tunes always sounded real nice to my ears. Now when I am trying to sleep on a plane I listen to this and it makes me feel like home. Incredible songwriter.

Number 4: Ed Rush and Optical

What can I say but the “Wormhole” Album was a complete game changer as far as I was concerned, how did they make everything sound so real? I have a pretty good idea now but at the time is was just so technical and so much love into every twisted second.

Number 5:  Ninja Tune

I know Ninja Tune is a Label but I have to put them in there as an influence. I used to buy every release on Vinyl and was really into everything they put out. Here are a couple select tunes I love.
