I was thinking the other day about what it would be like to be a New DnB DJ and what would be the best advice to get through a night without fucking up. here are my 5 things every rookie needs to know!

1. Never touch the headphone plug of the DJ before you!

When the DJ before you is ready to let you get on the decks he will unplug his headphones giving you the signal that its time to start getting set.

2. Don’t forget your headphones!

Having to borrow headphones is the worst thing ever in the world. you will inevitably end up with a pair of crappy headphones found in the back room and your performance will be very heavy effected.

3. Don’t play the headliners tunes!

If you are the opener for a headliner don’t play all they’re biggest hits just before they are gonna bury you with dub plates.

4. Don’t be a glory DJ

When your time is up give the next DJ enough time to get set up and don’t play 15 minutes over his/her set.

5. Its a 3 course meal!

A friend of mine once told me that a drum and bass night is a 3 course meal, with an opener, headliner and then roll out guy at the end. Know your role in this and be the best of whatever you have to do. There is pride in the warmup DJ’s job and I always know when a warmup DJ has done his/her job well.
